Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
